MATHEMATICAL MOSAICS AND TESSELLATIONS

This lesson focuses on the identification, construction and transformation of mathematical mosaics and tessellations.

First of all, the students will understand the properties of regular and semi-regular mosaics, as well as their own patterns and attributes.

On the other hand, they will become artists, in the way they will be able to transform regular mosaics in original tessellations by three methods: translation, rotation and reflection.

The students will apply the acquired knowledge in a real context. They will use geometric vocabulary in order to describe, compare and contrast different types of real mosaics and tessellations.

REFLECTION ON THE IMPLEMENTATION

It has been a very rich experience, for me as a teacher and, I suppose, for my students. They have learnt in a different way, experimenting, creating and enjoying the activities. I have spendt more than the expected sessions, six in fact, but I believe that this has been worth the effort. Nice project!
